There are a number ways to market yourself online and off. This is very important to do because you can be the best act in the world but if no one hears you then what does it matter. In my early years as a musician I didn't market nor promote myself much at all. I figured that since my group was so great, the labels and fans would be on a hunt for me. Well that wasn't the case. I did play many shows and had a buzz about my group which attracted some attention but it wasn't enough to put us over the top. These days you can do much of the promotion yourself and generate a huge fan base that will have the record labels looking to sign you.
